MAEVIA GRIFFITHS
Passionate about filmmaking, storytelling and the transformative potential of visual representations within social justice, I aim to bring together my university education, passion and values through filmmaking. I am currently finishing a Master in Development Studies, specialized in Power and Conflict and Gender studies at the Graduate Institute, Geneva, Switzerland. For my thesis, I am directing a documentary on the lived realities of undocumented women in Geneva. I attempt to position myself within this field by opening spaces for voices to be heard. My understanding of my position as a filmmaker was shaped through my personal path: Having grown up in Switzerland, then studied a BA in Disaster and Emergency Management and Development in Toronto (York University) and London UK (SOAS University), I then travelled around Europe, Asia, Western Africa and the American continent as well as worked for an NGO for women's rights in Bolivia and the DRC for the past 2 years. Through a focus on visual studies and visual anthropology, I self-directed my first documentary in 2019 after a few animation short-films and one crowd-founded travel documentary.
